Information on your options when leaving the LGPS
If you leave your job before retirement, or decide to opt-out of the scheme, you will be presented with one of the following sets of options depending on your length of LGPS membership (including any membership built up in, and still remaining with, other LGPS funds).
If you leave after two years' LGPS membership
- you can choose to keep your benefits in the Wiltshire Pension Fund. These are known as Deferred Benefits
- you may investigate a Transferring to another registered pension scheme
If you leave with less than two years' LGPS membership
- you will normally be able to claim a refund of your contributions, less a deduction for tax
- you may be able to transfer your benefits to a new pension arrangement (providing you have been a member of the LGPS for at least 3 months)
Please note, you must inform us of your intention to transfer to another pension arrangement within three months of our Refund Options letter. After this time, only a refund of contributions will be available.
If you re-join the LGPS, with Wiltshire Pension Fund or another LGPS fund, your records will automatically be combined, in accordance with LGPS regulations.
After five years or on reaching age 75, whichever is earlier, if you have not re-joined the LGPS or transferred to another pension scheme having expressed an intention to do so, a refund of contributions will automatically be payable to you.
